The Vendée Globe is the pinnacle of ocean racing. Competitors must sail 28,000 miles around the world completely alone on their boat. Starting from Les Sables D’Olonne, France without stopping or receiving any form of assistance… then try to arrive before their rivals back to Les Sables D’Olonne.
The adventure of this race is one of emotion and dedication. The race passes the Three Capes and involves sailing over 10,000 miles in the notorious Southern Ocean. A place of isolation and endless storms and wind, but also full of natural, untouched beauty and wildlife. The 100 or so competitors who have completed the Vendée Globe are amongst the only humans on earth to witness these remote parts of the ocean.
The challenge is to not only finish this race, but to be the fastest to do it. The yacht used in the Vendée Globe is the IMOCA 60 which are designed to exploit the latest technology advancements in the marine world to create the fastest sailing boats in the world. In the races 30 year history, the race time has been reduced by a third from the first winners race time in 1989 of Titouan Lamazou in 109 days to Armel Le Céac’h current record of 74 days.
The Vendée Globe takes place once every 4 years, the next edition starting in 2024. It is Will's objective to be on the starting line in 2028, competing against the very best in the world.
